Hasegawa/Minicraft 1/72 F-104G Starfighter
The legendary “Missile with a Man in it” Lockheed F-104 Starfighter was a high performance jet fighter/interceptor that made its first flight in 1956 and went on to set many speed and altitude records for jet aircraft. In addition, it served with many air forces and was only retired in 2004.
This kit is showing off markings of the Royal Canadian Air Force, which operated a Canadair built variant of the F-104G.
This kit was very basic on detail, with a simple cockpit and no details for the landing gear or air brake bays. This was my first experience with trying to do an aluminum finish aircraft. I chose Alclad Airframe Aluminum and primed the model by painting it with Tamiya gloss black. The Alclad paint can only really be used with an air brush — I had no success trying to fix up problems with a brush. I ended up re-masking the glare panel and re-spraying. The Alclad metal paint is just like creating a chrome part — it is quite amazing. However, I ended using almost a whole bottle on this small kit. The paint comes thinned to air brush consistency. It needs to be applied carefully.

I glued many parts on this model using super glue, I needed a quick setting glue to get things to mount at certain angles, etc. It stained the aluminum finish. so this is another lesson learned. I did a lot of filling and sanding (especially the fuselage halves), but this model features raised panel lines in some areas that cannot be rescribed, so I had to be careful.
The decals were old and brittle. I took great care in trying to apply them, but still there were some casualties.
Definitely learned that surfaces need to be super smooth and polished because the metal finish reveals all blemishes!
