OFL Kickoff 2009

Kanata, ON — On a crisp Friday at historic Entrust Cryptography Field, the OFL kicked off its 2009 season with a titanic clash between the defending champion Irish Stout and a newly retooled French Foreign Legion squad. The Stout returned all the members of their 2008 8-0 team including reigning league MVP Paul “The Mad Bomber” McRae, big tight end Dan “Danimal” Murdock, co-defensive player of the year Kirk “The Flash” Ireland, rookie of the year James “Smooth” Muir, and Bevan “Don’t throw it over my head” Watkiss. The Legion on the other hand fielded only two holdovers from last year’s 0-8 Detroit Lions-like debacle, QB Peter “The Rabbit” Arseneau and Carlos “The Jackal” Nahas. Newcomers included Mike “Mad Dog” Bodis, Adam “The Jet” Brunke and Gerry “Rice” Chartrand.

The Legion won the toss and took the ball at the 20 yard line. Wasting no time, Arseneau lofted a touchdown strike to rookie Chartrand, who hauled in the pass behind a bedeviled Watkiss. “Wait a minute — they have a fast guy?”, Watkiss was heard muttering in the Stout huddle. The conversion failed, but after the Stout were unable to connect on any passes, the Legion started a second drive from their 20 with the same result, this time with Chartrand dodging a lunging Watkiss and trotting in for the score. Just like that, the Stout found themselves in the unfamiliar position of facing a 12-0 deficit.

After avoiding a hard charging Bodis, McRae uncorked a long, fluttering bomb that found Ireland in the right corner of the endzone for the Stout’s first points. A conversion to Murdock closed the gap to 12-7. However, the Legion was not yet done as Arseneau unleashed his third TD pass of the day to Chartrand over the outstretched arms of Muir. Once again, the Stout were down two scores. After completing a couple of short passes, the Stout maneuvered to within a few yards of the Legion goal and McRae crossed up the defense with an Ireland end-around for the score. A conversion to Watkiss in the left corner made the score 18-14. “Could we just try playing a little defense?” pleaded McRae from his nose tackle spot. Almost as if he had been paying attention, Ireland picked off an Adam Brunke pass on the next play and returned it into Legion territory. From there, McRae hit Muir on a quick hitting pass into the right corner to finally give the Stout their first lead of the day, 20-18. After another Ireland interception, this time off the Legion’s third QB of the day, Carlos Nahas, McRae hit lumbering tight end Dan Murdock in stride and he wrapped the ball around the pylon to provide the final 26-18 cushion. Ireland, already late for his beauty salon appointment, wrapped up the affair with an interception in the endzone to snuff out the Legion’s final drive.

“Clearly the OFL is going to be a much more competitive league this year,” said OFL Commissioner McRae at the post-game press conference, “We are looking for much higher ratings. I’m sure I saw at least two guys on their smoke break look in our direction.”
