Ben Roethlisberger, Player of the Week, Sept. 7, 2014
Big Ben put on a great performance against the Cleveland Browns as the Steelers won their opening game of the 2014 season, 30-27. The Steelers dominated the opening half and raced to a 27-3 lead as Ben threw for more yards than he ever had before in single half. The Steeler defense was dominant as well and all was going smoothly in Steelerland as the game went into the break.
The second half was a different matter. The Browns suddenly came alive and scored 24 unanswered points to tie the game as both the Steeler offense and defense displayed a level of ineptness that was hard to believe. The Black and Gold finally managed to stop the Brownies deep in their own zone late in the game and Steelers took over at the Pitt 43 with 47 seconds left. Ben calmly completed a couple of passes to Markus Wheaton to set up Shaun Suisham for a 41-yard field goal as time expired. Pittsburgh escaped with a 30-27 win in a game that they should have won going away. Thursday, the Steelers face their bitter rivals, the Baltimore Ravens, in an important divisional matchup. Hopefully the first-half Steelers will show up.
