BGP surges towards a Superbowl showdown
Pablo Frank
Dec 09, 2002
What
a difference two weeks can make. It was not too long ago that a defeated
BGP was talking about a season that could have been. Team owner Pablo Frank
had openly spoken about selling the team to a bum on the street. A lesser
team (such as IP stack) would have probably given in (as IP stack often does
when they are down by 2 touchdowns) but BGP's Mike Ciancibello had had enough of the loser talk. "I picked up the phone and made a few calls" explained the erudite Mr. Ciancibello.
Overnight, BGP transformed its struggling squad into a powerhouse team of free-agent superstars with the likes of Adriano Palumbo,
Mike Garcia, Greg Martin, and the enigmatic Ted. Asked why Mr. Frank's previous
attemts to attract star power had failed, Mike explained his formula.
"Pablo thinks free agents are all about the almighty dollar but since
BGP has none, his offers weren't that attractive. I offered them VICTORY.
And a chance to win another Superbowl for BGP and their fans".
On Nov 26th, the new and improved BGP went to work dismantling the once
vaunted Stack. Ciancibello and Palumbo traded off throwing touchdowns to
Garcia, Martin, and Ted. BGP also showed off its vastly expanded playbook
with a brilliantly executed pass followed by a reverse handoff by Adriano Palumbo and Greg Martin. In a move that reminded hardcore BGP fans of the days of old, even Pablo Frank stepped in to show that he can still fling a few passes now and then. 2 sure-touchdown throws were ruined when BGP receivers Adriano Palumbo and Rob Hutchinson were startled by the arrival of perfectly thrown passes.
Pablo's day was made even more exquisite when he executed one of the
most revered plays in OFL football: the safety... on none other than Stack
prima dona Tom Szczerbowski.
"I've never even SEEN this team before," exclaimed an alarmed Tom. "My
dreams of winning an OFL Superbowl are washing down the drain!".
The Stack's Paul McRae
was visibly shaken by the steadily increasing number of INTs by his name
on the scoreboard. "Their defensive coverage is amazing! I can't even see
them anymore. It's like there's a blur of 25 defensive backs out there!".
When all was said and done, BGP had stunned IP Stack with a 35-14 victory but more was still to come on Dec 3rd.
McRae and his team regained some of its swagger when they learned that
virtually all of BGPs new-found stars called in sick after a week of binge
drinking and partying. What they did not count on was a backup QB named
Dave Smith and the sudden re-signing of Paul Bertels.
Bertels, who had played for the Stack all year surprised everyone when
he announced that he had switched to BGP. "Look, the Stack is a good team
but what it comes right down to is that I want another Superbowl ring. The
Stack may run up the points in the regular season but like the Ottawa Senators,
they're playoff chokers".
Bertel's BGP debut set the tone for the rest of the game as he picked off the first pass of the game.
BGP's Dave Smith
provided a steadiness at the QB position that BGP had been sorely lacking
in previous games as he was able to find Bertels, Martin, and Hutchinson
in the endzone.
The real story of the game, however, was BGP's rock-solid defence.
Despite the offense giving up 3 interceptions, the BGP defence was able to
hold the mighty Stack offense to only 3 touchdowns.
A late game controversy was averted when BGP evoked the "equal possession" rule and managed to hold on for a 28-21 victory.
BGP has now extended its winning streak to 2 and is already looking ahead to the playoffs.
"We's gonna get it done" explained a fired-up Ciancibello. "One game
determines who goes home champs and who goes home chumps. BGP has been down
before but a real champion is the one who picks himself off the ground and
kicks the other guy's ass!"
